Assignments call for original work, independent learning, and experimentation with materials and concepts. Students also become familiar with the nature of the creative process by learning about prominent artists through the ages at the introduction of new projects. Students are held responsible for terminology and principles of art and more importantly, they are encouraged to explore their own unique way of expressing themselves. In this studio art class, students will learn art principles and techniques, and experiment in media and design. Students create prints, drawings, paintings and special projects that are displayed on campus. Final grade will be a combination of daily work, projects, sketchbook assignments and test grades.
This course meets 3 timer per week. Students also have a group lesson once a week. Students learn music terminology and will be introduced to a variety of different musical styles. They perform in 2 concerts, play a solo at contest and perform "The Star Spangled Banner" at a ballgame.

This course meets 3 times a week. Students also have a group lesson once a week. Students continue to learn music terminology and are introduced to a variety of different music styles. They begin to recognize a wider variety of musical terminology and begin relating band music to other subject areas and other areas of life. Students concentrate on balance and blend as an ensemble. They perform at two coverts, one pep band event, and play a solo at contest.

The purpose of this course is to train a group of students to perform SATB choral music that is appropriate for concert and contests. A variety of styles and languages will be available to expose the students to as much of the music field as possible. The choir will participate in a regional music festival every other year, and on the alternate year at the Dordt Festival. Concerts will be given at the school at least three times a year. Choir meets every day. The emphasis in choir is on good musical literature and being able to sing the music with feeling with attention to details. There will also be an opportunity to participate in the solo/ensemble contest. Smaller groups will form out of the choir and will perform when called on for local originations and churches.
Concert Band (9-12) Credit: 1/2 Grades: 9-12 Concert Band is open to all high school students who qualify. This band meets every day for the purpose of playing band music appropriate for the students? ability and the interest of the audience. Exposure will be to a variety of musical styles. Each student will be able to identify scales and rhythms and perform them to the best of his or her ability. Concert Band will participate in regional instrumental contests and in the Dordt Festival every other year. Students will also perform a solo or ensemble at regional contests. There will be three concerts at school (one at Christmas, another in the fall, and one in the spring). Concert Band will perform as a pep band for home ball games and possibly tournaments. The pep band will usually perform at only one event per week. The music performed will be appropriate for the capabilities of the majority of the students in the band. The concept stressed throughout the year is the importance of using the talents God has given us to do the best we can.
Drawing and Painting I (9-12)

Drawing and painting is an introductory course witch includes exposure to a variety of drawing and painting styles. Various media are used both experimentally and in traditional ways. The course of study includes figure drawing and sketching, portrait study, still-life composition, abstract composition, and landscapes. A variety of media is used. Sketchbook work is also included. Friends of the Father (9-12) Grades: 9-12 Friends of the Father is a group of students that has been chosen from the Concert Choir to perform four-part music for entertainment, church services, and school concerts. Each student needs to try out and be able to perform his or her part reasonably well. The director schedules rehearsals before school or at other special times. Each student is responsible for purchasing on outfit chosen by the instructor. The music is different and usually more difficult than that performed on a daily basis in Choir.
This is an introductory course utilizing the elements of art and the principles of design in a variety of projects under studio conditions. All art experiences are based on the art elements of line, shape, space, color, value, and texture. Students become acquainted with a number of different media and are encouraged to experiment, invent, and transfer learning from one medium to another. Program contents may include drawing (perspective, portrait, still life, etc.), collage, painting, and clay construction, as well as appreciation for accomplishments in the history of art. Students will become visually aware of the world God has created around them. The final grade will be a combination of daily work, projects, weekly sketchbook assignments and test grades.
General Music and Choir (6)
This course is required of all students and will meet twice a week all year. I choir, the students will perform music with soprano and alto, descants, counter-melodies, and three parts. The students will be encouraged to experience worship through listening and singing contemporary Christian music. The students will have an opportunity to perform in concerts twice during a year. In general music, unique instruments and music from around the world will be listened to, and the Renaissance and Baroque musical eras will be studied briefly. In addition, various styles of music will be examined, including ballet, opera, and musicals.
General Music and Choir (7) Grades: 7 This course is required of all students and meets twice a week all year. In choir, the students perform music with two and three parts. The students are encouraged to experience worship through listening and singing contemporary Christian music. Students have an opportunity to perform in concerts twice during the year. In general music class, an understanding of music from different eras is learned, with emphasis on the Classic and Romantic eras. In addition, various styles of music are examined, including jazz, suites, and American musicals.

This course is required of all students and meets twice a week all year. In choir, the students perform music with two and three parts. The students are encouraged to experience worship through listening and singing contemporary Christian music. Students have an opportunity to perform in concerts twice during the year. In general music class, an understanding of music from different eras is learned, with emphasis on the Impressionistic and twentieth Century music. In addition, various styles of music will be examined, including concertos, symphonies, and sonatas.

The Jazz Band is a group of students from Concert Band that is chosen to perform music from jazz and other styles. Students volunteer to be in Jazz Band, bust must try out if the number of students needed is exceeded by those interested. The Jazz Band performs at concerts, churches, and entertains at community events. The Jazz Band rehearses one morning a week before school and occasionally during the school day.
